I FEEL LIKE I BLINKED LAST CHRISTMAS

There is a country song I hear often on my car radio called “Don’t Blink”.  Part of it goes like this:  “You’re six years old and you take a nap, you wake up and you’re twenty-five and your high school sweetheart becomes your wife…”.  I feel like I blinked last Christmas and it’s this Christmas.  The older you get and the faster time goes, hence…”Don’t Blink”.

I see Thanksgiving as the one day a year that reminds me to stop, count my blessings, and be thankful for each one.  Christmas, besides being a time to celebrate the birth of Christ, is a time to be with loved ones and being grateful you have them.  I see New Year’s Eve as a time of evaluation to see what I did right, as well as what I should have done differently, during the past year.  I then don’t so much make resolutions as set a new direction towards the next level.

This time of year is a particularly difficult one for a lot of people.  Those who are alone, those whose finances don’t allow any celebration, those who lost loved ones in the past year.  This year, many are losing their homes.   Remember that charity is not just about giving toys to toy drives, food to the food drives, etc.  It’s about taking the time to give a kind word, to listen to someone who is lonely and has no-one to talk to, to invite a neighbor who has no family to share a meal or some egg nog.  Most everyone thinks of needy children.  Remember the seniors too, they’re our forgotten people and many are alone, lonely and have little, or no, allowance in their budgets for celebrating anything.

My little town does a toy drive every year.  This year we’re also doing a fund raiser for our seniors.  The money will go to gift certificates for the local supermarket, the pet supply store, cab rides, etc.  These cerficates will be given in Christmas cards to those local seniors who have little, if any, discretionary income left after their bills are paid.  This event was my idea, and I am very pleased I shared it with people who could make it happen.

Look around, someone nearby has nowhere to go this Holiday Season, include them in your own celebration…it could mean more than any amount of money you could give.
