My Inner Child is Alive and Well

Written by christine on Friday, July 6th, 2007 in General.

My inner child is alive and well.  I am especially aware of this on the Fourth of July when I still get a real kick from watching the fire works.  I work at the resort on most holidays, but we are perfectly located for watching.  I take a break and ooh and aah over what I am sure is not the best display on the planet…..but I still love and enjoy them.  There are always a few watchers whose inner child has not only died but dried up and mummified as well.  They make fun of it all and have not an ooh or aah in them.  I am very grateful that all fireworks outside of the professional show are illegal in my town.  We have too much forest and our summers are dry.  By July, we’re dry as a bone.  It’s also great for my poor dog who gets terrified by fireworks on TV, never mind fire crackers down the road.

On the fourth itself, I woke up to a power outage.  Of course, everything I needed to do, including make coffee, required electricity.  We’re also in the middle of a heat wave, and I couldn’t use my fan.  For us, the outage lasted eight and a half hours.  It was caused by someone breaking into a power station and vandalizing the equipment.  This “prank”  has cost two towns thousands of dollars.  Some businesses (restaurants) had to close for the day.  I do hope they catch the people who did it.  If they’re teen-agers, I would suggest a sentence of home confinements with no power (no cell phones,Ipods or lap tops either) for several days.  This should be followed with community service cleaning up after other vandals.  A job, with all money going to those who lost income for part of the day might not be a bad idea either.  But……we still had fire works.

Extreme heat makes me cranky, we don’t have it often where I live, but when we do I’m definitely not in the best of moods.  Interestingly, as I’ve gotten older, I can give a good reading no matter what.  I’ve given some of my best readings with tooth aches, in 100 degree weather, on three hours of sleep and with very bad colds.  Fevers do seem to put me out of commission as does grief.  Of course, laryngitis does definitely cramp my style.  It does cool off very significantly at night.  I then open my deck door, place a box fan in it blowing air in for several hours.  This will cool off my house enough to stay relatively comfortable until around 4:00pm the next day especially if I point a small fan in my direction.  The one advantage of those very hot days, none of the pets are making mischief during the day…….they are all lying around very stretched out and still.

My blind kitten is an endless source of entertainment and wonder.  I find her in places I didn’t think she would ever get to.  Now that she feels totally secure, she plays a lot and seems to be everywhere.  She’s also affectionate and purrs easily.  I’d forgotten how much kittens can eat.  She has doubled in size in two weeks.  The other cats have accepted her and play with her, particularly my little Miss Thing.

I find it interesting that I’m allowed to make three times as much income to qualify for very low cost pet neutering as I would be to qualify for MediCal.   Our Health Care insurance system needs some serious fixing.  Actually, I think we need to start  a new system from scratch and eliminate for profit medical insurance altogether.

Hope you all had a good fourth and had some oohs and aahs in you.
